| | The first hour of Coraline gave me an uneasy feeling. Actually, even after the movie was done, I still felt pretty creeped out. But after further contemplation, it had some redeeming qualities.
Anyway, here are my thoughts, chronologically:
- Initially, the movie depicted Coraline's dysfunctional family as the norm and "hopeless", almost justifying childhood rebellion and disrespect.
- Initially, the movie depicted Coraline's eerie "Other" family as her ideal. Which seemingly justified indulging the fleshly lusts of children (sweets, games, narcissism).
- I was glad that the movie did not ultimately glorify the morbid visuals (like other movies such as The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride), but finally identified the ugliness of the Others with evil.
- The movie finally showed that bad parents are still corrigible, and children should honor them anyway.
- Morbid (or explicitly pagan religous, idolatrous, or demonic) imagery glorified in heroic characters, is something I don't want to condone. Even the usage of that type of imagery for the sake of condemning it, I think, is a liberty that man should not take lightly.
- 3D tech still has no better application than displaying furry animals.
